When your teen gets their driver’s license and decides to get behind the wheel, you may have various concerns as a parent. As per the reports by NHTSA, car accidents have been one of the primary causes of fatalities in teenagers. Getting a license does not mean they are safe on the road. Therefore, there are various measures you can take as a parent to help them know about the laws and protect them from any mishappening event.

    Distractions and teenage drivers

Distractions are one of the leading causes of accidents in teens. It is no surprise that teenagers are constantly indulged in their phones and often get into an accident due to distractions from texting and driving. If your teen gets into an accident due to someone else’s carelessness, or you believe your teen was the negligent one, make sure to speak to a Bend car accident attorney to protect your child.

Educate your teen about the laws.

Your teen already knows about the traffic laws. However, it is crucial to remind them about the rules. Additionally, if educate them about laws related to car accidents so that if they get into an accident, instead of panicking and keeping it from you, they can take measures to protect themselves and file for a car accident claim (if the accident happened due to someone else). Moreover, you must also tell them about the steps they should take after getting into an accident, even if it is a fender bender.

Introduce them to safe driving habits and lead as an example.

Tell them about your driving experiences, things you have struggled with as a driver, how to drive in certain weather conditions, and more. Knowing your good and bad experiences as a driver will help them understand things from a different perspective.

In addition, tell them about safe driving habits that you regularly follow, so they know how to keep themself safe. If possible, lead as a driver. Ask questions about where they are driving, how they drive in certain areas or situations, who they are driving with, etc. Instead of getting angry or being rude to them, guide them through the process.

Also, you may help your teen driver to read articles and features that will enable them to know when they are accountable for their actions and if they are not invincible.
